Grateful Dead - 1979-07-01 - Seattle WA (SBD)
We open our July tribute to the Grateful Dead with the first of 4 shows today. This one is a soundboard recording from Seattle from July 1, 1979, 3 dozen years ago today.
1979 In Grateful Dead History
- On January 7, The Dead play their first show at Madison Square Garden. They would eventually play 52 shows at that venue, setting a record for the most performances by any artist at the "World's Most Famous Arena". That record would eventually be surpassed, first by Elton John, and then by Billy Joel.
- On February 17, the band plays the first of 66 shows at the Oakland Coliseum.
- That first show at the Coliseum was also the last for Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux, who left the band.
- On April 22, Brent Mydland joins the Grateful Dead on keyboards and vocals.
- Live shows from 1979 that were later officially released include November 5, November 6, December 26 and December 28.
